Alma 21:22

Updated: Mar 31, 2020

22 And he also declared unto them that they might have the liberty of worshiping the Lord their God according to their desires, in whatsoever place they were in, if it were in the land which was under the reign of king Lamoni.

In essence, the people under the reign of Lamoni were blessed to have what we have in this country— liberty! Freedom! Freedom to worship God according to the dictates of our own conscience and allowing others to do the same. How blessed they were! Not only were they free to worship as they saw fit, they now had the true and everlasting Gospel!

How blessed indeed.... and did I mention they were Lamanites? You know, the wicked, horrible, dark, filthy, useless Lamanites. Of course I am being facetious. The “Lamanites” should more appropriately be labeled, if they must have a label, “Children of God”. That’s the only label that seems to apply to every person born in mortality.

And so the lesson to us is not to judge people. Not to label and compartmentalize them, which we do so often. Fat. Skinny. Ugly beautiful. Smart dumb. Good evil. We don’t know people's hearts, for man looks on the appearance but God looks on the heart.

But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.

1. Savior, may I learn to love thee,

Walk the path that thou hast shown,

Pause to help and lift another,

Finding strength beyond my own.

Savior, may I learn to love thee—

Lord, I would follow thee.

2. Who am I to judge another

When I walk imperfectly?

In the quiet heart is hidden

Sorrow that the eye can’t see.

Who am I to judge another?

Lord, I would follow thee.

3. I would be my brother’s keeper;

I would learn the healer’s art.

To the wounded and the weary

I would show a gentle heart.

I would be my brother’s keeper—

Lord, I would follow thee.

4. Savior, may I love my brother

As I know thou lovest me,

Find in thee my strength, my beacon,

For thy servant I would be.

Savior, may I love my brother—

Lord, I would follow thee.
