8 And now when Aaron heard this, his heart began to rejoice, and he said: Behold, assuredly as thou livest, O king, there is a God.
And surely anyone would rejoice at such a response! That someone would trust them and their word enough to believe in something they couldn’t even see- because of the example that was set before for them.
Ammon says that as surely as the king lives, God lives. And what could be a greater example of the existence of God than to compare His existence to our own? For our own existence is that which we know better and more surely than anything else. Even if all around us is illusion, we know we exist.
And as surely as we exist, God exists! And why would that be so hard to believe? If we exist, why would it be so hard to believe that God exists? Even if we cannot see him? If someone said, years ago before modern technology, that they had a father who was alive, but they lived in some foreign land across the ocean, would we doubt it? Even though we have no evidence but the testimony of the person making the claim? No, we wouldn’t doubt, because everyone exists, and everyone has parents that exist even if they reside somewhere else- else we don’t exist because we came from them.
So why is it so hard to believe that we have a Heavenly Father across an ocean of stars and galaxies, that we cannot yet see?
I will tell you why. Because for someone to admit that fact or possibility, one must be willing to live by the dictates of that Heavenly Father because that Parent spanned the heavens with his hand, and controls and subjects all things. When that Parent is the Creator of not only them, but all things, then they are the ultimate authority and one would be obliged and willing to submit to them.
To accept that another person has a mother and father whom they cannot see is easy. Accepting that we have a Heavenly Father who has all power, and may require us to submit our will to his, is quite another thing. We are surely self willed creatures! We do not want anyone telling us what to do!
Unless, of course, we are wise enough to understand our relationship to God. That we are as little, ignorant toddlers compared to Him, and that we need to trust in him and submit our will to His as a child submits to his parents, understanding that his parents know infinitely more than they do.
So it is with us and God. We must understand the truth about us and about him, and our relationship to each other. That we are the toddler. And He is the parent. That we know almost nothing compared to Him. And that we need to trust him implicitly if we are to be safe and happy, and even to preserve our lives- just as it is with us as little children.
