Alma 26: 21

21 And now behold, my brethren, what natural man is there that knoweth these things? I say unto you, there is none that knoweth these things, save it be the penitent.

Two very important priciples come to mind in this short verse.

First, that nobody can know the things of God but by the Spirit of God. The natural man, the carnal man, the devilish man, the fleshy man, the reasonable man with all of his sophistry and supposed knowledge cannot know these things. They are known only by the Spirit's witness to our spirit. As the scriptures says, no man can say that Jesus is the Christ, but by the Holy Ghost. And when the Lord posed the question to Peter of who the people say he is, and who Peter thinks he is, Peter Replied, "Thou art the Christ. The Son of the living God." To which the Savior acknowedged that he was correct, and that "flesh and blood" had not revealed that to him, but His Father in Heaven.

Now, the intersting part, at least to me. Ammon did not address what I had as far as how those things are made known to us, even though he surely understood! But he basically said that the witness of the Spirit will not and cannot come until one is humbled and repentant enough to receive that witness. It cannot and will not come to the proud, for the proud will not recieve it, thinking they know better, and thinking they have no need for repentance.

The key to receiving a witness of the Spirit of spiritual things (the things that world considers foolishness) is to be humble and repentant. To acknowledge that we don't know everything, and putting aside our enmity to God which is the fruit of pride
