3 Now this people again refused to take their arms, and they suffered themselves to be slain according to the desires of their enemies.
Once again, the people of Anti-Nephi-Lehi kept their word, and allowed themselves to be killed rather than take the life of another- even their enemy. It’s one thing to make a wonderful promise. And it’s another to keep it.
One of the things that makes God who he is in his attributes and perfections is how he always keeps his word. His word is not only his bond, but appears to be one of the powers by which all things are created. How that is done, I do not know. I do not know if the intelligent elements who honor him simply obey him (as Cleon Skousen suggested in a most wonderful talk on the Atonement of Christ), or if it is by some other means.
Nevertheless, we can always count on his to keep his word with exactness. That is one of the reasons why the Atonement of Christ was necessary. Because I God the Father said that were would die spiritually and physically and lose his presence because of sin, than there had to be a means of counteracting the punishment, according to his word, with mercy.
I highly recommend this talk by Skousen. Just wonderful....
